My name is Anca Constantinescu and I am a visual artist from Bucharest, Romania.
My mixed media abstract and figurative works explore the human figure and the idea of communication between people. Most of my works are very bright and vibrant, full of saturated colours and contrast. I like to combine a series of mediums, like acrylic, oil, industrial and spray paint with different techniques such as painting, pouring, scraping.

Art wasn’t my initial choice in life. It was only after a few years after my studies in IT, that I discovered being covered elbow deep in paint, was just what I needed. The corporate IT world just wasn't going to cut it, so I decided to take a leap of faith and switch careers. I had my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Being a student again in my late 20s was very refreshing and I finally felt I was doing what I was meant to do.

The years I spent there really formed me and structured a new way of thinking about art and my projects. I began to have my first group exhibitions and went to creative camps where I collaborated with other artists in group projects.

My works have always been about people, whether they are simply portraits, or they tell a different story like the importance of friendship and communication, so being around family, friends and new people is what inspires me to create. I believe most of us want to evolve and change, to become a better version of ourselves, and that is what I seek to address. In my works, I want to make viewers meditate about their relationships, about themselves and question the way they communicate with others in order to discover themselves.

Also, reading about art and contemporary artists inspires and motivates me to persuade my own path. Nature is another source of inspiration, as plants amaze me with their infinite shapes and colours which I like to implement in my works. In my studio, I like to work on multiple paintings at the same time. Most of the time I make a quick sketch, on paper or digital, as I like to put my thoughts visually in front of my eyes. I find that the first stages of painting are very natural and freeing, whereas the finishing touches can be demanding. Anytime I feel stranded, I like to switch to another work, and come back to it once my ideas are settled.

My paintings are mostly very intense, full of saturated colours and contrast. I like to push myself and experiment with different mediums and techniques as it is very challenging, but also thrilling. In my artistic process, I use a variety of tools, from paintbrushes to spatulas, sponges or even my hands, to achieve a unique composition and shapes. I often combine glossy surfaces with matte ones to achieve an alluring perception in daylight.

During my art studies, I also discovered my passion for teaching art, so after I graduated, I got a job as a middle school art teacher and later I worked at an art high school. It was a great experience and I enjoyed guiding the students in their art projects, going with them to museums or art events and challenging them to step out of their comfort zone and experiment with new techniques and materials. Here, I became friends with three other colleagues, artists like me, and we formed an artistic group that led to a wonderful collaboration. For example, last year we put together an intricate project with two duo exhibitions.

My works have been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Romania and internationally, in countries such as Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Republic of Moldova, and Canada, and can be found in private and public collections in Romania. Currently, I’m working on new art projects, I hold online art courses for young children and adults and I’m creating my personal website.
