We Asked 6 Artists How Their Mothers Inspired Their Careers

We Asked 6 Artists How Their Mothers Inspired Their Careers

Mothers have always been a source of encouragement and inspiration for many of us. Especially for artists, mothers can often be first fans or cautious guardians when it comes to making it as professionals. Nonetheless, it is no surprise that sometimes mothers of creators would turn into their muses. For the upcoming Mother’s day, we wanted to join the world’s celebration of the strength, the elegance, and the warmth of the person who gave us life. In order to honour these women, we have asked our artists to share stories about what role their mom played in an artistic career. Below, discover the heartwarming stories of gratitude that 6 artists dedicate to their mothers.

‘My mother has been a great support for me on the artistic path’

‘My mother is the person who supports me the most in my artistic activities. She understands my desire to create because she has also devoted herself to the creative sector. Years ago, when I tried to paint my first paintings on canvas, she didn't hesitate to hang them on the walls, even though they were not ideal.

My mother has helped me to furnish my first apartment, where we also made a small studio. She was the person who could not wait until my first exhibition took place. To this day, I remember a large bouquet of roses that she brought to me for the opening of the Art Spectrum exhibition at Trenčín Castle. She always says that attending those art events is the most memorable experience in her life. My mother has been a great support for me on the artistic path. Her kindness and care are what inspire me in good and bad times. I am forever grateful to have her.’

‘It is difficult to express my gratitude for her, as she has done a really tremendous work’

I want to express a special thank you to my mother, who always supported me in everything. When I was a child, she saw in me a talent for drawing and sent me to the children's drawing school. She was always interested in what I draw, and would always listen to me, standing by my side through all the failures and victories. When my mother was young, she also wanted to become an artist. But, life turned out differently. I believe that her desires are now embodied in me. In addition to drawing lessons, my mother sent me to a dance school and a piano school, so my childhood was very busy. When I got older, I entered the art lyceum, and even then my mother was always with me. I told her everything about art so now she knows what is ‘composition’, ‘color science’, ‘rhythm’, ‘stain’, and ‘plastic.'

Now that I am older and have children myself, I understand very well what labor and effort my mom has put into me, and how essential it was for me as a child. There were times when I wanted to quit painting because it was a difficult path, but she always supported me!

She often tells me: "Son, they do not shake a barren tree," which means that I’ll have to always overcome some difficulties, but never should I quit my job! It is difficult to express my gratitude to her, as she has done really tremendous work. I can say that my mother is both a friend and a teacher to me. And I thank her for her support!’

‘She gave me unconditional love, patience, and understanding’.

‘My mother Anna has always been and still is my guardian angel. My good fairy.

It is of course because of her that I was born into this world and thanks to her I became an artist. She supported me from the very beginning of my adventure. She encouraged me to continue and develop my passion, which is an art in various aspects. She took me to drawing and painting classes, as well as to tutoring English when I started having problems learning it. It is not only her education that merits her. She gave me unconditional love, patience, and understanding. And it may not have been easy because of my wayward and rebellious character when I was younger :) When the breakthrough came - the choice of high school - she suggested to me a high school of art in another city so that I could fulfill my "own legend". In my hometown, there was no way to study in any artistic direction. I graduated from high school with honors, because she believed in me. Our relationship, as well as ourselves, developed and matured. We keep in close contact despite the kilometers separating us. I moved closer to the sea also so that my mother had more excuses to travel, trips, and walks along the sea that she truly loves.

In Polish:

Zachęcała do kontynuowania i rozwijania mojej pasji czyli sztuki w różnych jej aspektach.Zawoziła mnie na zajęcia rysunkowo-malarskie, a także na korepetycje z języka angielskiego, gdy zaczęłam mieć problemy z jego nauką.Nie tylko edukacja mnie jest jej wielką zasługą. Obdarowywała mnie bezwarunkową miłością, cierpliwością i wyrozumiałością. Ukonczyłam owe liceum z wyróżnieniem, ponieważ ona we mnie uwierzyła.Nasza relacja, jak i my same, rozwijała się i dojrzewała. Dalej utrzymujemy bliski kontakt, mimo dzielących nas kilometrów. Przeprowadziłam się bliżej morza także po to, aby moja mama miała więcej pretekstów do podróży, wycieczek i spacerów brzegiem morza, które prawdziwie mocha.

My mother has always been a huge inspiration for me. Although she is strict, my mother is also fun to be around. Besides being my mother, she is also my best friend who knows basically everything about me. Whatever happens in my life, we always share those moments together. My mother is someone I go to whenever I need advice. And not only she is my best friend, but she is also on very good terms with my own acquaintances! I think she texts them more often than I do:)

All in all, I really appreciate the fact that I have someone like my mom to share the amazing experiences of life with.

‘When I visit her we love to talk about all kinds of things over a warm cup of coffee'

‘The nature of our work and the worlds we come from are very different. But even though she doesn't completely understand me, my mother was always supportive. Because of that I appreciate and respect her deeply. When I visit her we love to talk about all kinds of things over a warm cup of coffee.’

'The relationship between me and my mother was always special to me. She is the only person who was always there for me throughout my whole life. In the beginning, when I started painting, she would be skeptical about my endeavors. However, when she started seeing the results through my personal exhibitions and sales, she would slowly change her mind. This process is still ongoing I would say. But her doubts are what pushes me forward. I would say that for me the power of moving forward is what is inside of me, not the outer sources. Although having the support of a significant person in your life is a big plus indeed.'
